In May of 2017, we began shooting Word Is Bond: a story seeded in my wife Alex’s childhood which quickly germinated into a script and production upon our move from the Bay Area to Los Angeles. While she and I have worked on creative film projects together going back to our first collaboration and screening in Chicago, through her videos for Boy King Islands & Caural, this is truly her directorial debut - and my most involved role as a producer. Through the film’s editing process and an ensuing Kickstarter to retroactively cover its production costs and take us through post, we wrapped in August of 2018 after I finished the following piece of the puzzle: the film’s soundtrack.
Each of the songs composed for the film - with few exceptions - were very short vignettes. After we began submitting the film to festivals for the 2019 circuit, I revisited these pieces and in effect constructed the imaginary “full songs” excerpted for the film. Two of them were combined and expounded upon to create Boombox Mask, a song premiered on XLR8R, Igloo Magazine and Bandcamp Weekly.
